Writer. Reader. Weirdo.
Andrew Scott—former professor, former editor, former young person—is, somehow, still writing fiction and comics. He also writes copy (so much copy) of all kinds in his role at Rare Bird, the most trusted modern marketing agency in the Midwest. (They literally pay him to say that.)
Andrew Scott
He’s not the actor who played the hot priest. He’s not any of the other people named Andrew Scott, either, including those who may have written a book or two. He’s definitely not the other two dudes named Andrew Scott whose are in the system at the small salon where he used to get his hair cut. He’s this guy here on the right. Have a look.

(Professional Endorsements)
Andrew Scott’s stories are streamlined, intense, and unsettling. His characters don’t quite know themselves, but the author knows them well. They teeter in the margins of safety, in a way that many Americans have been pushed off the path to the dream. I recommend these stories highly.

[Naked Summer] is a heart-wrenching collection, at once hilarious and wise. I couldn’t put it down.

Author of The Revenge of the Radioactive Lady
Naked Summer by @_AndrewScott has reminded me that I love short stories. Read the collection, people. You will care about his characters.
Matthew Quick
Author of The Silver Linings Playbook, writing on Twitter (when it was still Twitter)
Scott writes with a rare synthesis of sensitivity, even delicacy, and matter-of-fact bluntness. It’s a tremendously effective and affecting combination. These are the works of a writer who knows of what he writes.
Robin Black
Author of If I Loved You, I Would Tell You This, writing for American Book Review
[Naked Summer is] a surprisingly mature book, a complete and powerful collection of stories.
Robert Boswell
Author of The Half-Known World and Living to Be a Hundred
Andrew Scott’s stories take place in the Heartland, and they will land squarely in your heart. Unflinching but sweet-tempered, they ring as plaintive and pure as ballads.
Michael Parker
Author of Don’t Make Me Stop Now and All I Have in This World
In Andrew Scott’s quietly moving stories, the characters live rooted in loneliness and leaning toward a light. There is wisdom to spare in the way he writes about the choices men and women make and the choices they allow to be made for them.

Author of Hyssop and The Complete History of New Mexico
Infrequently Asked Questions
Do you have another book of fiction?
Actually, I’m close to finishing several manuscripts. If you’re asking me why I haven’t published another book of fiction since Naked Summer was released, that’s a complicated question with a multi-part answer. I taught university courses for a long time for not nearly enough money, which meant I also freelanced as a writer and editor to survive. That made it hard to find time to write. Becoming a parent didn’t make it easier, and there are other reasons, too. But I finally quit teaching, switched to a new career, and eventually made my way back. A Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Indy Arts Council helped.
Are you still an editor?
I stepped away from regular editing work when I quit teaching. If you have a manuscript and want to hire me to edit it, we can talk—but in my time at literary journals and a small press, I edited some of the best writers in America (finalists for the Pulitzer and National Book Award, for example), so I’m not cheap.
Do you want to write for Marvel, DC, et al.?
Monthly company-owned comics? Maybe, if the editor is cool and the creative team is top-notch. I love writing comics. I love working alongside co-creators. I might be more useful writing a mini-series, fill-in issue, or standalone graphic novel. I like endings more than “to be continued” serialized fiction.
Do you have an agent?
Many years ago, several agents requested the manuscript for what became Naked Summer, and they all said they liked my writing, but they wanted me to have a novel ready. At that point, I had not finished a novel manuscript that I liked. I may need an agent in the future, but that agent should know now that I will write novels and probably nonfiction, but I’m also going to keep writing short stories, comics, and maybe YA, too. Hell, I don’t know. I could write anything.
